Dacica Guesthouse

On the realm of the Dacians, miracles bear simple names. In the daytime, the old strongholds doze shaded by beeches and at night, the “Iele”, malefic fairies of the woods and waters, entangle the tops of birches, whispering age-old spells. Here, on this blessed spot, where two brooks embrace the walls of a fortress, was born Dacica Guest House. One day spent in our guest house, at the foot of the Dacian stronghold means to get in touch with history. Starry nights, though, are meant for fairy tales.

Conceived as an extension of Dacica Foundation, Dacica Guesthouse aims at developing cultural tourism in the area, and works to promote the cultural, historic, and ethnographic heritage in the zone of the Dacian fortresses, with the help of a team of experts in history and archeology.

Located within the perimeter of the Natural Park Grădiștea Muncelului – Cioclovina, close to the Dacian stronghold of Piatra Roșie (a UNESCO monument) and in the proximity of the other Dacian fortresses and settlements in the Orăștiei Mountains (Sarmisegetuza Regia, Costești-Cetățuie, Costeși-Blidaru, Fețele Albe), Dacica Guesthouse is the ideal place for an active, educational, and restful holiday.

The history fan tourist will be able to enrich his stay amidst nature through all kinds of experiences that will connect them with the past.

Presentations and guided visits

The Dacian fortresses are, unfortunately, poorly promoted by the authorities that administer them and by the institutions responsible for their research. The visitors of the sites often do not have any means of information at their disposal. We strive to fill this gap through presentations or mini conferences supported by specialists, members or volunteers of Dacica Foundation, thus offering tourists correct scientific information.
For groups of at least 8 people, clients of the guesthouse, with prior appointment, we can provide guided visits to the Dacian fortresses in the area. In our conference room you can watch movies with historical subjects and consult the books from the library of the Dacica Foundation Study Center, with over 4000 volumes, many of which are history books.

Events

Each year, at the end of August, we organize the Day of the Dacian fortress Piatra Roșie, which includes conferences, debates with the authorities, guided visits, gastronomic experiments, workshops, and other activities.

Activities for children

At Dacica Guesthouse, children have a yard of almost 2 hectares where they can play safely or do sports. For groups of children, we organize, on request, experimental archeology activities, guided visits, presentations and history lessons and other practical, creative activities.

Ancient gastronomy

Many of our events include ancient gastronomy sessions, where we cook food using the ingredients and preparation techniques that the Dacians had available, but we also explore ancient Roman or Greek gastronomy. On request, we can prepare for guest groups an ancient buffet dinner, with numerous dishes both with meat and vegetarian.

Dacian mead

Mead is an alcoholic beverage with the same alcoholic strength as wine, obtained since ancient times by fermenting honey. By adding fruits and plants that offset the sweetness of honey, we imagined two varieties of dry mead, perfect to accompany dishes or long stories with friends. The red mead called Amurg (Twilight) contains a bundle of late summer evening aromas: black currants, thyme picked from the hills around us and a hint of wormwood. White mead Amiază (Noontime) brings a warm autumn scent, which wraps the sweetness of honey in the sour veil of buckthorn berries and the fragrant breeze of sage leaves.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Living traditions

In the villages of Hunedoara County, many folklore traditions are still preserved unaltered. Bands of ”călușari” carol the villages around Christmas, each with a distinct dancing style and a repertoire of countless archaic carols tailored to each household they visit. On Christmas Eve, the children “go to Pizărai”: they gather at dawn at one end of the village and carol around the houses to wish people well-being and fill their bags with apples and cookies. At Sânziene (a pagan tradition that coincides with the Orthodox holiday of the birth of St. John the Baptist but also with the middle of summer when nature and fecundity is celebrated), the girls from the village braid their wreaths and gather to play on a meadow near the village. Old fiddlers know songs and ballads from very old times.
The guesthouse’s holiday programs include all these traditions, so guests have the opportunity to witness them and take part in them.

The boutique

At the reception, you will find a small boutique/bookshop managed by cats, where you can buy the books from Dacica Publishing House, reproductions of old maps of Dacia, miniature copies of the bust of the Dacian nobleman from the Vatican Museum, replicas of Dacian jewelry or pieces of Dacian pottery, Dacian mead and other souvenirs. If you enjoyed the several dozen types of jam that you could taste at breakfast, you can take supplies home.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

TV

The rooms are not equipped with TVs, but there is a large screen smart TV in the dining room and another one in the lounge. Digi and Orange networks can be watched, and we have a Netflix and Disney+ subscription.
Our guests are encouraged to borrow books from the Dacica Foundation library, with over 4000 volumes from all fields.

Access

The road to the guesthouse is unpaved for the last 7 km, but is periodically rehabilitated and is in good condition, so one can drive safely in any type of vehicle.

Communications

At the moment, we only have coverage on the Orange mobile phone network, but we have Starlink satellite internet and free wi-fi network all over the place.

“Am dorit să ieșim un pic din rutina zilnică, la o distanță nu prea mare de Timișoara, fiind cu o fetiță de trei ani. Am găsit întâmplător pensiunea, și nu aveam timp să citesc detalii, așa că am rezervat pe principiul "ce-o fi, o fi, cât de rău poate fi doar pentru o noapte?" Am prins o ninsoare ca-n povești, iar în timp ce noi, fetele, admiram și ne minunam de priveliști, soțul se îngrozea de drumul plin de nămeți, total nepracticabil. Dar proprietarul pensiunii a vorbit cu primarul, iar Primăria a fost foarte promptă, până la prânz drumul fiind deja curățat. Un angajat de la pensiune ne-a împrumutat lanțurile și a venit câțiva km cu noi, cât să trecem de porțiunea cea mai anevoioasă. Am fost un pic neinspirați să venim cu mașină joasă, cu tracțiune pe spate și fără lanțuri, dar nu se aștepta nimeni la o asemenea ninsoare și oricum nu regretăm deloc. Am retrăit, timp de câteva ore, bucuriile iernilor de altă dată: sanie, îngerași, om de zăpadă și bulgăreală...
Pensiunea este foarte frumoasa, oferind camere curate, confortabile, sală de zi cu televizor, șemineu și multiple jocuri de societate, o bibliotecă ce oferă sute, poate chiar mii de cărți, pisici și căței prietenoși (deși puțin fioroși la prima vedere ?).
Mâncarea întrece orice așteptări: gemuri și deserturi făcute de doamnele de la bucatărie, mezelurile de casă și lactatele de la săteni, totul gătit proaspăt și cu drag!
Am plecat de acolo și cu o plasă de gemuri, sirop de muguri de brad si zmeurată ?
Ne dorim sa revenim și la vară, pentru că e o zona foarte frumoasa și cu multe locuri de vizitat.

“We really loved are one night sleep over here. It was calm and peaceful, the property is planned for anyone with a family or a bigger group who would just love to relax in the mountains. The host was so helpful and welcoming. Breakfast was amazing! There's alot of cats and dogs outside the property and it's fun to play with them. The place is pure magic, starting with the fact that it is positioned in Gradistea Muncelului National Park in the heart of the forest, late autumn and spring is the best time to visit.
This region is one of the most beautiful you will see in the world in its own particular way!
If you are a foreigner and want to have a trademark Romanian experience, here is the place to find it.
Where do I start? There are at least a dozen cats on the property along with dogs who protect the place from bears and wolves so you won't likely see any. It doesn't matter if you are a cat or a dog person, they will melt your heart, I know they have melted mine.
The food is phenomenal, PERIOD! It is traditional food, soul food, not a la carte, but believe me when I say this, it's been a loooooong time since I have tasted traditional food like that, locally grown vegs and meats 100% organic (store bought is too far away :)) for one)!
Perfect location to hunt for mushrooms, the landscape is littered with them. all you need to do is take a 20 minute walk and there you are 2 hours in hiking on a hill not wanting to stop, happened to me.
Last but not least are the people that make it happen, people in this part of Romania have a deep warmth to them, they have a calming and relaxed attitude towards life, there is a soothing way that they talk, inherit wisdom springs to mind, and it is contagious, you will burry your burnout in the garden and leave it there, trust me!
Having read this, keep in mind that the place is usually sold out, as many of these locations are kept secret by the locals, so do please call well ahead of time and make sure to keep your promise and come and stay with them, you will not regret it!

“It was really remote and in the nature. Full of green, although it was drought in the area at that time. Beds were really comfortable. We stayed in the little huts. The bathrooms were for all, but very clean and cleverly built. Breakfast was really good and you can try the local homemade sweets for breakfast (dulceață). They are really good.
