Easter is the most important Christian holiday, but the celebration of rebirth and the victory over death is found in many pre-Christian religious systems. In the Land of the Dacians, the traces of past ages are everywhere, and pagan antiquity and Christianity intertwine not only in folklore traditions, but also in buildings: shy little wooden churches are hidden in the shadow of the hills on which the megalithic fortresses of the Dacians stood, the monuments of the the Romans conquerors are reconquered by time and stone churches with Latin inscriptions are built from their slabs and statues, in which Christ wears a flowered shirt, like a Romanian peasant.
\nWe invite you to celebrate the Resurrection together and to revive, through hiking, food, stories and songs, moments from the history of the last two millennia.
\nOn Friday afternoon, we await you with dishes cooked according to 2000-year-old recipes, as they could only be tasted at the court of the Dacian kings. It can be assumed that a king like Decebalus will have had cooks from all over the world, so we will enjoy both Dacian and Roman, Greek, or Celtic dishes. Then, in the evening, around the fireplace, we will talk about the Dacians and more, over a glass of mead, with our expert, Aurora Pe\u021ban.
\nOn Saturday morning we will climb through the forest, to the Dacian fortress of Piatra Ro\u0219ie, a UNESCO monument, the least explored of the fortresses in the Or\u0103\u0219tiei Mountains. Unique artifacts have been discovered here, and the mysterious fortress still seems to hide many secrets. After lunch we will go to visit some of the oldest religious buildings in the country, the stone churches of Strei, Streis\u00e2ngeorgiu and Densu\u0219. The latter has an unusual appearance, featuring a mixture of styles and materials. Some windows are actually Roman sewer connections, the walls of the church are supported by Roman columns, the altar is a sarcophagus lid, the lions on the roof were Roman statues, and the massive stones in the walls bear ancient carvings and some of them have inscriptions in Latin.
\nBefore midnight we will go up to the village of T\u00e2rsa, which dominates the surroundings, to participate in the Paschal Vigil, together with the locals, at the small wooden church in the village. At midnight this service ends: all light-sources in the Church are extinguished, while churchgoers await in darkness and silence for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, marked by the deliverance of the Holy Light. A priest comes out holding the Holy Light and shares it with the churchgoers; people pass the fire to each other, leaving the church to bring the holy light back to their home. On our return, the Easter dinner awaits us, with painted eggs, lamb meatloaf, sweet bread and other traditional dishes.
\nThose who who will not be able to stay awake until late at night will find at breakfast a large table with all the goodies of the evening and many more besides. Brandy and home-made liqueurs will flow abundantly, and the genuine ros\u00e9 wine, which we make every year from the grapes of the century-old vine that shades our terrace, will sparkle, ruby, in the glasses.
\nAfter the meal we invite you to witness the spring ritual of sheep shearing. Our little flock will be eager to get rid of their winter clothes, and those who dare, have the opportunity to learn to use the scissors. As a reward they will receive an apprentice shepherd diploma and a surprise gift. Those who want to, can take a picture with the freshly groomed sheep, dressed as a shepherd, with the traditional cloak made from sheepskin, the shepherd\u2019s pouch, the small felt hat and the indispensable club.
\nWe will spend the afternoon and evening at a gorgeous meadow at the foot of the reddish rock on which the Dacians built the Piatra Ro\u0219ie fortress. We will take volleyballs, badminton rackets and other games with us, for those who feel like exercising a little bit, or we will simply lay down on the grass watching the sky, while our friends Bogdan and Rare\u0219, who know how to skillfully handle the guitar and the violin, will delight our hearing. During this time, we will not sit idly by, but we will start the fire and get the cauldrons bubbling to prepare a great dinner for you, with tasty dishes, cooked shepherd-style. It goes without saying that we will have with us all the bottles of spirits that have kept us company in the days gone by. We will paint the children and turn them into bunnies, give them baskets and invite them to roam the clearing in search of dozens of eggs hidden in the grass and bushes.
\nAfter dusk, we return to the guesthouse and the party goes on around the campfire as long as you can, with music and drinks. The eight cats, the three dogs and the two donkeys will keep us company, if they won’t already be three by then also, because not only lambs are born around Easter.
\nOn Monday, after breakfast, before saying goodbye, we will visit the capital of the Dacian kings, Sarmizegetusa Regia. Much more than a simple fortress, Sarmizegetusa was a city that spread over several hills, with hundreds of terraces where houses and workshops stood, with roads whose route can still be seen today through the forest, with cisterns and ceramic pipes that brought water to inhabited areas, but especially with monumental constructions, built with materials brought from tens of kilometers away, whose meaning is not completely deciphered even today, although the first researches date from the 19th century. Our guide will be the one who knows Sarmizegetusa like no one else, Aurora Pe\u021ban, archaeologist and president of Dacica Foundation.<\/p>\n
